The "Tin" concept originates with the military. A pilot was issues a Survival Tin(s) in the event he was shot down. It was concluded that having something to help survive was better than nothing. Tins, could be sealed and the the actual container made of stainless, aluminum or tin could also be used. They were loaded with various things such as a Hand saw, matches, signal mirror, some method other than matches to start a fire, a minor first aid kit, maybe some fishing equipment, salt tablets, knife and maybe some sort of Rescue rations such the ones carried in the lifeboats.
